Cape Verde, the Dark Horse
On June 22, Beijing time, they held four-time World Cup winner Uruguay to a draw.
A week earlier, they fought title favourite and defending champion Spain to a goalless 0-0 stalemate.
The dark horse scripting a legendary run at this World Cup is an obscure African side: Cape Verde. The national team once sank as low as 182nd in the FIFA world rankings, and has now surged to a historic high of 63rd place.
Located in the northwest of Africa, Cape Verde is an island nation made up of ten volcanic islands. It has a population of just over half a million and a total land area of merely 4,033 square kilometres. Yet this tiny country has pulled off a feat that most top football powerhouses can hardly match.
